Chapter 8: Lachlan
Lachlan knew he was probably too heavy to be sprawled across Camellia like this for long, but he was too comfortable to move. Her curved body was a wonderful pillow. Besides, having her beneath him like this felt comforting—knowing exactly where she was, that she was safe and content, breathing gently underneath his ear.
Our mate, his dragon hissed.
Yes. He’d felt it at the moment when they joined. It was nothing like it had been with Veronica, or with any other women he’d been with. The way their hearts and minds had melted together—it was magic. Literal magic. Mates.
Lachlan wanted to just lie here and luxuriate in that fact. Really sink into it. The knowledge that Camellia was right for him, and he was right for her.
He left the lingering concerns—what about her work, what about Aidan, what about the fact that she’d never heard of shifters before today—for later. For now, he listened to the thud of her heartbeat and knew that it was his.
Eventually, she moved a little, sighing underneath him, and he lifted his head. God, she was beautiful. The curve of her nose, the luxurious eyelashes, the fullness of her lips—he had to kiss them.
“Mmm,” she said quietly in the darkness of the tent. He pulled back to smile down at her.
“Ready to sleep?” he asked her.
“Mmhmm.”
“Need me to bring anything inside or secure anything?”
“Oh, my—samples—” She started pushing herself up, but he stilled her with a hand on her chest.
“Let me do it. What should I get?”
She resisted for a second, but then seemed to run out of energy, collapsing back down onto the sleeping bag with a groan. “Oh, okay. If you insist.”
“I do,” he said, not bothering to hide his smile. Lachlan loved, more than anything, doing things to help the people he loved. Veronica had always had such a hard time accepting that. And Camellia had a similar independent, fierce spirit, but he was happy to see her able to let him do something for her.
She told him what he should bring inside and what he should make sure was shut up tight, and he went outside, comfortably naked in the cool forest night, and obeyed all of her instructions to the letter.
Then it was back into the warm tent, the air still smelling like the two of them. Lachlan curled back up against Camellia, who sleepily protested his chilly feet and then snuggled close, eyes closed and obviously almost asleep already.
Lachlan held her close, inhaling her scent, and thought that he could’ve frozen time right here—his mate in his arms, his son safe asleep at home, the whole town of Oak Ridge quiet and content—and been happy forever.
***
The next morning, he woke when Camellia stirred. When he opened his eyes, she was looking at him.
There was a little frown between her dark brows that made him hesitate to follow his instinct, which was to lean forward and kiss her, maybe suggest a reprise of last night. Instead, he smiled. “Good morning.
